Letter #4: Ignore the Dragon and it Grows

Dear Amigo,

Let’s talk about dragons.

In a 2002 lecture, Dr. Jordan Peterson read a children’s book by Jack Kent called There’s no Such Things as a Dragon. In the story, a dragon shows up in a family home, but only the boy in the family will recognize and address it.

The dragon gets bigger and bigger when it’s ignored and not addressed by the adults, such as the mother, who repeatedly states that “there’s no such thing as a dragon.” Eventually, the dragon is big enough to move the house around, wearing it like a giant turtle’s shell. When it is finally acknowledged, though, it shrinks back down to the size of a cat.

Peterson points out that our problems can be the same as that dragon. Past traumas or present worries or problems or trials must be faced or they grow and take over our life.

So that’s some food for thought. We’ll chat again tomorrow.

Sincerely…

…and stay scrispy, Amigo,
