Dear Amigo,
Let’s redeem Dr. Peterson from yesterday’s post, shall we?
As a recap, he mentioned that the human brain has more connections than there are subatomic particles in the universe. But, as we saw yesterday, there are about 100 trillion estimated neural connections in our brains and about 10^80 atoms (let alone subatomic particles) in the universe.
True, these are both estimates, but they are not near close enough to each other to justify Peterson’s remark. But is there more to the story?
If you interpret “connections” to mean more that single neuron-to-neuron links, you can get to the heart of this matter. If we count connections as pathways, or unique brain states, the estimate number of possible pathways nears infinity!
In short, the brain is indeed the most complex thing in the universe, as far as we know so far, and by a long shot.
So chew on that today!
Until tomorrow,
Always remember to stay crispy, my friend,
Jacob Tullos
